Quick Answer

For Indian residents, the relevant question is not simply whether an app offers currency trading. RBI materials specify permitted foreign-exchange routes and publish an Alert List of entities and electronic trading platforms that are not authorized for the stated purposes. The list is expressly non-exhaustive; a brand’s absence does not establish authorization. Verify the current RBI rules, authorized persons, recognized exchanges and exact product before using a platform.

Is Forex Trading Legal in India?

India’s foreign-exchange framework is jurisdiction-specific. RBI FAQ and direction materials describe transactions that residents may undertake through authorized persons and permitted channels, including the recognized exchange route for specified currency derivatives. The exact rules and eligible contracts can change, so read the current RBI material rather than relying on a general internet summary.

This page is educational information, not legal or tax advice. A product marketed as “forex” may be an exchange-traded currency derivative, an overseas CFD, a leveraged OTC contract or another service. These products should not be treated as legally equivalent.

Which Currency Pairs and Platforms Are Covered?

RBI publications set out the permitted contracts and conditions for recognized exchanges. The permitted currency pairs and rules depend on the current direction and exchange product specifications. This article does not reproduce a static list as if it were a complete, permanently current authorization.

A platform interface does not determine whether the transaction is permitted. Check the product’s legal structure, the exchange or counterparty, the authorized intermediary and the account terms. Confirm the latest permitted contracts on RBI and recognized-exchange websites.

RBI, SEBI and Recognized Exchanges

RBI is the primary source for India’s foreign-exchange framework under FEMA and its directions on authorized persons and electronic trading platforms. SEBI supervises securities-market intermediaries and recognized exchanges within its remit. The exchanges publish their product specifications and trading rules. These roles overlap in some market infrastructure but are not interchangeable.

A company incorporation record, payment gateway listing or foreign regulator licence does not alone establish that an overseas platform is authorized for Indian residents. Check the exact company and service with the authority responsible for that activity.

RBI-Authorized Routes, Products and Remittance Rules

RBI’s forex FAQ, updated 28 August 2024, says resident persons may undertake forex transactions only with authorized persons and for permitted purposes. Permitted electronic transactions should use an RBI-authorized electronic trading platform or a recognized exchange identified by RBI: NSE, BSE or Metropolitan Stock Exchange. This is a route-specific rule, not approval for any app that offers an online forex interface.

The same FAQ says the permitted purpose for foreign-currency/Indian-rupee derivatives is hedging exchange-rate risk, while foreign-currency/foreign-currency derivatives have no restriction in terms of purpose. It separately lists permitted OTC products and exchange-traded futures and options. Product, user category, authorized intermediary, venue and current RBI directions still apply; these broad categories do not turn an offshore CFD into an exchange-traded contract.

RBI’s FAQ also says that remitting margin or margin calls to an overseas exchange or overseas counterparty is not allowed under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. Before funding an account, identify the actual counterparty and payment path rather than relying on a payment method displayed in an app.

How to Read the RBI Alert List

The RBI Alert List says it includes entities that are not authorized to deal in forex under FEMA or operate an electronic trading platform under RBI’s 2018 directions. RBI also says the list is not exhaustive and that absence should not be assumed to mean authorization. The source directs users to the official authorized-person and authorized-ETP lists to establish status.

The Alert List names certain international brands. That is an official regulatory warning context for the names and websites shown in the RBI document; do not treat it as a conclusion about every company with a similar name or a different legal entity. Check the exact domain and current RBI publication.

Offshore Forex Platforms, Fees and Currency Conversion

Offshore platforms may advertise currency pairs, high leverage or account funding options to Indian users. Those features do not establish that the entity or product is permitted for an Indian resident. BrokerSafari does not recommend such providers on this page. Seek independent local advice if you are unsure how FEMA, tax or payment rules apply.

If using an authorized exchange product, review brokerage, exchange charges, taxes, margin, contract size, settlement and currency conversion terms. An overseas account may also involve remittance, conversion, bank and withdrawal conditions. The provider’s fee page cannot replace current Indian regulatory guidance.

How to Check a Platform

Use the RBI’s current authorized-person and electronic-trading-platform lists; confirm the recognized exchange and exact contract; verify the intermediary’s status with the appropriate regulator; and read the account agreement for the legal entity, product and complaint route. Keep a copy of the source and date because lists and rules can change.

Do not treat absence from an alert list as approval, a foreign licence as local permission, or app availability as evidence of compliance. If the platform will not identify its contracting company or product structure, the uncertainty is material.

No offshore retail forex or CFD broker is presented as an India-approved option here. BrokerSafari has not established that the global brokers in its review directory are authorized to serve Indian residents for the products described on their international sites.

Frequently asked questions

No. RBI rules specify authorized persons, platforms and permitted transactions. Check current RBI directions and the exact product rather than assuming an overseas app is allowed.
